A Beginner's Guide to Cigars in Australia
Getting started with cigars can feel intimidating, but the fundamentals are simple. This guide covers everything an Australian newcomer needs to enjoy a great cigar.
Choosing your first cigar
Start mild-to-medium. A Connecticut-wrapped cigar in a Robusto (5" × 50) is an approachable, well-balanced size that burns for around 45 minutes.
Cutting
A sharp guillotine cutter gives the cleanest cut. Trim just above the shoulder of the cap — take too much and the wrapper can unravel.
Lighting
Toast the foot with a butane torch or soft flame, rotating the cigar until the edge glows evenly, then draw gently while lighting.
Storage
Cigars keep best at around 70% relative humidity and 18–21°C. A cedar humidor with a hygrometer is the classic solution.
